Rocky aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani

 Movie Review (Hindi)

Raja aur Rani kii Prem Kahaani starring Alia Bhatt and Ranveer Singh has been directed by Karan Johar. I have been waiting for this moment just to see him take the Director's chair once again.

And yes, I wasn’t disappointed. Over the top, no doubt, what with Ranveer Singh playing Rocky, a very rich guy with little sophistication, it has to be. However, Jaya Bachchan provided the surprise element for me. That she can be such a wicked north Indian matriarch is a treat to watch! Shabana Azmi and Dharmendra pairing up again is something that lovers of 70s cinema would love to see. Tota and Churni, playing parents to Alia are well-known actors from Bengal, hence the Bengali household is all authentic. Alia  playing Rani, as usual is great at what she does. I enjoyed the way she speaks Bangla.

The use of hit Hindi film songs is an excellent touch. Like all Karan Johar films, the well-to-do family reuniting theme shines through.

Gangubai Kathiawadi

Movie Review (Hindi)

I have seen Alia Bhatt in Dear Zindagi, Raazi and Gully Boy and each time I felt she made a place for herself in the world of Cinema. She needed to be taken seriously. Gangubai Kathiawadi did not disappoint. That Sanjay Leela Bhansali saw the potential in her to enact such a role, says a lot.

The metamorphosis from Ganga to Gangubai was evident but subtle and Alia seemed to have total control of her expressions, voice and movement. The rest of the cast lived up to the story. Talking of stories, I am elated that this character was picked up from the book Mafia Queens of Mumbai by Hussain Zaidi and Jane Borges.

Interestingly, it made no difference that the movie did not have a male lead or Hero and I certainly did not miss him!

I look forward to seeing more such powerful characters, especially women, played by competent actors, come up on screen and set it ablaze.

Gully Boy

Movie Review (Hindi)

"He is just a Gully Boy" said one of the characters in the movie. But “just the Gully boy” went on to rule hearts. Ranveer Singh, playing the reticent character Murad, expresses his dissatisfaction at the way things are in his world in the Dharavi slums through poetry. The energy levels in the movie rise with the entrance of MC Sher played by Siddhant Chaturvedi, the rapper who shows Murad a way out of the mundane. Our Gully Boy then raps his way into a confident individual able to stand up to his father’s dominance.

With actresses like Alia Bhatt and Kalki Koechlin providing support, the movie is bound to do well. The characters are well etched and the edit is fast. Dharavi stands out as a world holding many, many stories waiting to be told.

Director Zoya Akhtar certainly knows how to hold the attention of ciné goers, ending with the competition. It is an age-old trick which somehow always get the right reaction to a sense of vindication. I only wish the director had risen above this and taken the movie to a different level.

Nevertheless, I loved the statement, so pregnant with hope and aspiration – Apna time aayega!

Raazi

Movie Review (Hindi)

Here is a Hindi movie which is a spy thriller but not quite. It has the entire gamut of an emotional drama and that is why it is different and that is why it is so watchable. I have been an admirer of Alia Bhatt and this movie simply strengthens my belief in her acting skills. Besides she has got one of the most talented directors, Meghna Gulzar, to direct her.

This movie is based on real life and has several heart-stopping and heart-breaking moments. Despite high drama what stood out was the subtlety of the enactment. Just not what is expected from a commercial Hindi movie with its over the top acting, hamming and mindboggling stunts.

What stood out was the fact that Pakistan was not depicted as the war mongering ogre that it is generally shown as. Here, Indians marry Pakistanis and can live happily, though thanks to our political and armed discourse we are making it more and more difficult.

The movie is like a breath of fresh air. Each character has been excellently portrayed and there is the 1970s feel in the surroundings.

Sehmat is a character who will not be forgotten anymore, whether it the real Sehmat or the actor Alia who brought her back to haunt us.

Badrinath ki Dulhaniya

Movie Review (Hindi)

I avoid movies starring Varun Dhawan, but this movie came as a pleasant surprise. Though the movie was embellished with ridiculous songs and dance sequences, the story itself had a good message and knowing our audience, such movies are an excellent way of reaching out to the public.

In middle class households with a conservative upbringing, it is difficult for girls to fight for a better life. The entire town seems to conspire against you. And here is Alia Bhatt's character who becomes a runaway bride and chooses to fly, literally.
And not just that, Varun's character, called Badri, follows her all the way to Singapore to get her back and extract revenge. But seeing her and her ambitions, he is a changed man. It all turns very bollywoodish, but the message is clear - Listen to your daughters and do not kill their dreams.

Dear Zindagi

Movie Review (Hindi)

I know I am a little late in catching this movie but I had been waiting. Somehow I knew I wouldn't be let down and when I finally watched, I wasn't. Let down, that is.
Shah Rukh Khan apparently played an extended cameo. Whatever that means. But he shone in it. I think he does a good job of playing characters close to his age. Patients are bound to fall in love with this psychologist.

Alia Bhatt plays a young talented cinematographer with aplomb. Her independence, ambitions and her relationship issues come out beautifully. Director Gauri Shinde indeed has the pulse of today's youth.

So we see broken relationships with parents and boy friends, single woman roughing it out in a big city, looking for good job opportunities, living a bohemian lifestyle, relying on a close circle of friends. These are what most young women face in today's world.
If only solutions could come in the form of the handsome and humorous Jehangir Khan!!

Just a small question --- Why this title?

Looking forward to Gauri's next...
BTW thanks to the producers for backing this movie!!

Movie Review (Hindi)

Two States

No, I haven't read the book by Chetan Bhagat. That's a good thing 'coz I could not compare the two. This was the first time I saw Alia Bhatt and second time I watched Arjun Kapoor. And I was not disappointed!! I am surprised! Both the actors were good at what they were told to do. In fact it seemed too easy for them. The story did not have much to say, what with the regular North and South Indian divide, though the casting was well thought out. But I got nothing extra out of it. The parents are just typical or stereotyped Punjabis with their strange ways of looking at vegetarian food and skin colour and the Tamilians with their grumpiness looking down on punjabi culture. Why so stereotypical? And are parents of such highly accomplished youngsters really so narrow in their outlook? Never mind, it was an entertaining movie with good acting skills showcased, which happens quite rarely (in Bollywood). So it was worth it.
Hope both Alia and Arjun get good directors in their other ventures, though that again is a rarity in Bollywood.
