 Movie Review (Hindi)

Shah Rukh Khan (in a double role) is a complete treat for the eyes. His last movie, Pathan, was quite the sizzler but this is several notches higher. It provides a roller coaster ride with all the masala and slickness one can think of, no time to breathe, not even during romantic interludes. After all, Atlee is the director. Then there are actors like Vijay Sethupathi, Deepika Padukone, Nayantara, each one doing their job commendably.

Even though the movie highlights such important issues as corruption in Health services, Agriculture, Armament deals, Elections, there is hardly time for each of these to take root in our minds.  

As a person who enjoys Shah Rukh Khan films, I wish I could see him do more films similar to Swades, Chak De, My Name is Khan, and so many others. 

What I mean is - films where he is everyman.

Gehraiyaan (Depths)

 Movie Review (Hindi)

A movie that has romance, tragedy and suspense so beautifully packaged that the audience cannot resist. The fast paced story line has a lot of secrets to reveal and director, Shakun Batra, has done a wonderful job with the pace. 

Deepika Padukone has it in her to light up the screen, not just because of her beauty but for her acting skills as well. She simply needs the right director, as this movie proves. All the other characters provided the support required to make the movie what it is, a thriller that stays with you. Having Naseeruddin Shah and Rajat Kapoor just added to the attraction quotient.

Thank you Shakun Batra and the entire team that wrote the screenplay. We could do with some more of this genre of movies.

Chhapaak

Movie Review (Hindi)

Chhapaak, a splashing sound (made by acid thrown on someone’s face, in the context of the movie)

Acid attack survivors who are women, have somehow not been in the limelight for whatever reasons. But these women live each day of their lives reminded every moment of how difficult it is to live a normal life. Not only do they see themselves as someone they cannot recognize but so does society, which often looks upon them as freaks.

I am happy Meghna Gulzar selected this topic to direct which, not surprisingly, has not been a topic for commercial movies. I was pleasantly surprised at the treatment of the film. There was a documentary feel to this movie, based on a real life acid attack survivor, which made the pain stand out.

Deepika Padukone playing Malti, made a point in opting to do this movie and it is a risk as she is seen as an acid attack victim with a face quite unlike hers. She is growing as an actress no doubt but she needed to be more than a giggly school going girl. Vikrant Massey, who plays Amol, shines in every role he does as he brings a certain truth to his work.
Hopefully, this movie will create enough ripples in the corridors of power to take a relook at the laws that should give justice to those who suffer. It is also necessary to create a social environment where acid attack survivors feel safe and cared for.
 

Piku

Movie Review (Hindi)

I enjoy movies directed by Shoojit Sircar. Especially because he teams up with an excellent scriptwriter, Juhi Chaturvedi, and voila! an excellent movie is created.

Piku has an interesting story and well defined characters. I have always appreciated Irrfan Khan's acting abilities. I find Amitabh Bachchan getting better with age. But the surprise package is Deepika Padukone. She was so much at ease, getting into the skin of Piku, that I really felt sorry for her and annoyed with her dad.

The humour built around the digestive tract was beyond compare and the toilet seat sitting on top of the car is something I am not likely to forget in a hurry. The last shot of Mr Bachchan touring Kolkata was a delight as was the huge ancestral house where the last scenes were shot.

But the movie is all about the journey from Delhi to Kolkata, Bhaskar Banerjee's (Amitabh) perception of life as it changes and Rana's (Irrfan) exasperation and growing fondness for Piku.

Looking forward to more such quirky though true to life stories...
